Tunisian gold
Olive oil is an integral part of Tunisian culture, history and economy. It is found in every home, it soothes our ailments, and it is an essential ingredient in every dish. It represents a tradition and a craft in the country that dates back more than 2,000 years.
Historians tell us that it was the Phoenicians, the founders of Carthage, who imported olive trees from the Middle East.
Even today, olive oil production remains artisanal, enjoyed by families or sold in neighbourhoods. But it is also Tunisia’s leading agri-food product. In 2020, the olive oil trade brought in nearly 2.3 billion dinars for the country, according to the National Institute of Statistics.
